What is Odin Flash Tool?

Odin (also known as Odin3, Odin Downloader, or Odin Flash Tool) is the official firmware flashing program from Samsung for Windows PCs. The utility interfaces with Galaxy devices in Download Mode to flash stock firmware binaries for manual software upgrades, downgrade, or unbricking the device. It may also be used to root Galaxy devices by flashing custom recoveries (such as TWRP or Safetstrap) or Magisk-patched firmware binaries.

Samsung mainly uses the tool internally, at approved service centers, and in their factory for flashing and testing software. However, it was leaked to the public via XDA-Developers and is now freely available for usage by end consumers.

Odin may be used on any Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP computer to flash firmware binaries in the .tar (tarball) and .tar.md5 file formats.

Prerequisites:

Before you begin, you will need the following tools and drivers:

  • A computer with “Windows” or “macOS“.
  • A “USB Cable” that can connect your “Phone” to your computer.
  • Take a full Backup before trying Flashing on an Android device.
  • The “Samsung USB drivers” for your computer.
  • The “Stock Firmware” for your phone.
  • The “Odin Flashing Tool” download.

Flashing a Samsung phone is the process of installing or upgrading the device’s firmware (operating system) with a new version, generally to correct faults, add functionality, or customize the device. This method necessitates caution, since erroneous actions may result in bricking your device (making it useless). Here’s an overview of how to flash a Samsung phone:

  1. Download and install the Samsung USB drivers for your computer.
  2. Download the stock firmware for your phone.
  3. Extract the stock firmware file.
    • You should get 5 files: AP (System & Recovery), BL (Bootloader), CP (Modem / Radio), CSC_*** (Country / Region / Operator), HOME_CSC_*** (Country / Region / Operator).

  4. Download and install the Odin flashing tool.
  5. To enable “USB Debugging” and “OEM Unlock” on your Samsung Galaxy device.

  6. Boot your phone into Download Mode.
    • To do this, turn off your phone completely. Then, press and hold the Volume Down + Power buttons at the same time and plug in a USB cable. When you see the Warning Yellow Triangle screen, release the buttons.

  7. Open Odin on your computer.
    • In Odin, click the “AP” button and select the AP file from your extracted stock firmware.
    • Click the “BL” button and select the BL file from your extracted stock firmware.
    • Click the “CP” button and select the CP file from your extracted stock firmware.
    • Select the “CSC” file that you want to flash. If you want to keep your apps and data, select the “HOME_CSC” file.
      In Odin, click the BL, AP, CP, and CSC buttons to add the necessary firmware binaries.
  8. Tick the “Auto Reboot” and “F.Reset Time” boxes in Odin.
  9. Connect your phone to your Windows PC or Computer in Download Mode.
  10. Click the “Start” button in Odin.

  11. Odin will start flashing the firmware to your phone. This process may take a few minutes.
    • Note: Please do not “Disconnect” or “Unplug the USB Cable” on your phone.
  12. Once the flashing process is complete, your phone will reboot.

If you properly follow these procedures, you should be able to flash your Samsung phone successfully. It is crucial to know, however, that flashing your phone might be dangerous.
